Math
Instead of only doing "Mad Minutes" on paper in the traditional fashion, we will be using a program called Extra Math (online). This will enable students to work at their own level on the facts that they need to master before moving on to the next level. Memorization of basic math facts is an essential building block that paves the road to easier acquisition of math concepts. Please have your child practice their math facts at home at least 20 minutes each week. Even five minutes a day makes a difference! There are flashcards available at most dollar stores and at Target.
The Common Core states that students need to have both addition and subtraction facts mastered through 20. Mastery consists of being able to answer every fact within 3 seconds. If your child has not mastered both addition and subtraction fact fluency, be on the lookout for homework to come home that will help your child complete these goals!
As we move through math this year you may notice that the strategies your child is learning look different from the way you were taught as a child. I know they look different than the way I was taught! By teaching and exposing students to these strategies I have found that they are having greater success with number sense, calculations, and problem solving. If at any time you have questions about how to do a strategy, please do not hesitate to call, email, or write a note. I am here to help! In the past I have sent step by step directions, complete with examples, and parents have found this to be extremely helpful.
