Arrival 8:00-8:10 am Dismissal 3:05
Important!!!
Call or Email the office ASAP or send a note if your child is going someplace other than normally scheduled, or if your child will be absent for the day. Do not wait until 2:00pm to make the switch. Remember that we have several children to get to the right place at the end of the day. Please DO NOT rely on voice mail or email to let me know of changes in schedule because I may not get it in time to make the necessary changes. It is best to keep to a regular routine as much as possible. We understand things happen. Always include myself and office staff Rose Engel rengel@saugatuckps.com and Stephanie Bell sbell@saugatuckps.com for change of routine Emails. It is my goal to help all of my students to feel and be safe. Students who have a regular routine and know about their end of the day plans ahead of time can focus on learning. THANK YOU!
Attention Volunteers & Chaperones:
All volunteers need to be registered with the office (forms in back-to-school folder) and sign in at each visit. These are precautions for the safety of all of our Douglas Elementary School children. THANKS!

Communications:
I will be communicating primarily through email and possibly blog for general information. I may also use REMIND, this is for short bursts such as picture day reminders and late bus notices if I get the chance. Hopefully we can have most of this be paper free! However, please let me know if you need to receive a paper version. The daily folders are a great place to send notes, lunch money etc. back to school. Try to remind your child to bring it to me.
Homework:
The most influential thing you can do at home is to share books with your child. Ask your child questions throughout the reading. Discuss characters, problems, setting, solutions, facts, etc. It is also useful to use real life opportunities to practice real life math concepts. Chores and challenges such as setting the table, dividing portions, measuring ingredients, counting and managing money, and other tasks are beneficial.
Weekly homework will typically be sent home each Monday, and due the following Monday. This homework will be a review of skills already taught in the class. Think of it as a menu. Rather than having to choose everything, there will be options to choose based on your child's interests, goals, and time constraints that week. We give a week, so that time may be budgeted accordingly. Our goal is to foster responsibility as well as academics. I thank you as your child’s first teacher and biggest supporter!
Backpacks and Papers:
School papers will be mostly sent home on a daily basis. Your child needs to bring his or her backpack each day. Your child will check his or her mailbox on their way out of the door as they are being dismissed. Please make a habit of going through papers each night. There are often important notes from myself or the office, and it will help you keep track of what your child is doing each day!
Book Orders:
I will usually send home book orders monthly. When ordering books, you may pay online or with a check. Please make the checks payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. It is easy to order on Scholastic’s secure site, www.scholastic.com/bookclubs
Class Activation Code: H82R7
Breakfast and Lunch:
Breakfast and lunch are available for students at school. If your child will be having breakfast, please remind them to go directly to the cafeteria when they get off the bus, or drop them off at that entrance. Breakfast doors CLOSE at 8:10 a.m. You may qualify for FREE or reduced prices after completing the “Lunch Line” form from the back to school folder, or on line at www.lunchapp.com Monthly lunch menus are on the school website. It is convenient to pay for a whole month at a time. You may send a check or cash to school LABELED with your child’s full name & teacher, and we will see that it gets to the lunchroom. You may also set up an account at www.sendmoneytoschool.com. You will need your student’s ID#.
*Please fill out the breakfast form to let me know whether you would like this opportunity for your student.
Snack:
In 2nd grade students bring their own snack, labeled with their name. Please ONLY send nutritious snacks. Cookies, donuts, cake, and candy tend to disrupt the students focus and attention. Some acceptable snacks are apples slices, carrots, crackers, cheese sticks, granola bars, yogurt, and real fruit snacks. We will avoid known food allergies as much as possible when we have that information. I have a mini fridge to keep snacks cool as needed. We have a water cooler in our class available throughout the day. Save juice for special occasions!
Water Bottles/ Cooler:
Since research has suggested students need to stay hydrated to learn, our classroom has a water cooler! I will allow each student to bring a water bottle to class. If it is consistently a problem that distracts from learning, it will be sent home and not to be returned to school. These bottles need to have caps that stay on so that we can reduce spills. Pull up tops (sport tops) work great. We try to send them home at the end of the week for cleaning.
Birthdays:
We will be celebrating birthdays in our room. Please do not send invitations to school unless they are for the entire class or all girls/boys. This helps eliminate hurt feelings. You may send in a treat for the class. Again, we appreciate healthy snacks, and little or no frosting. Think 22 cupcake celebrations, YIKES! Small cupcakes are fantastic or think of alternatives. Trail mixes, chilled/frozen go-gurt, or fruit salad. Get creative! Please also think of easy classroom distribution.
☺We welcome 1/2 birthdays for those who have summer birthdays.

Supplies:
We are asking the children to bring in community supplies to school. A list for our class has been sent home already. If you need a new list, please let me know. I will be collecting most of the supplies brought in so that we can use them as needed throughout the year. Each student will keep their backpack, and water bottle in designated locations. Thanks again for your support!!! If you are unable to participate at this time no worries. Bring what you can, when you can.
Box Tops: 10 cents each!
Please collect and send in Box Tops and Campbell's Labels for Education. The money earned from the Box Tops goes toward fun & educational experiences for the students such as assemblies and guest speakers. These little labels can be found on everything from soup to Kleenex. We also collect Spartan brand UPC labels. Every little bit helps. :) THANKS!
JUST IN CASE:
Please continue to store a bag of extra clothes in your child's locker, labeled with their name. While most students rarely have "accidents" at this age, there can be other reasons a student may wish to change. The playground can often be wet or muddy throughout the seasons, there can be lunchroom spills, torn clothes and other mishaps. Save yourself a trip to school during your busy day by having a backup set of clothes here. Also, remember to label all sweatshirts, jackets and other layers etc. with your child's name on the tag. The lost and found bin gets full, and students rarely identify their own belongings! Leaving extra gym shoes / snow gear in lockers is acceptable as well.
THANK YOU, once again! I look forward to a great year with you and your child!
